Love this post!! Those masks intrigued me a lot. Masks have played an important role in many fields such as in shamanic rituals. Even in today's technology-driven society, it seems to me that masks have power to mesmerize, awe and transform us! I don't have a mask but have a pair of fake ears(tiger). It may sound odd to you but I wear them on my head when rooting for my favorite baseball team in the stadium.

Oui, AnnaLivia, ce sera très intéressant de pouvoir discuter virtuellement de ce que nous avons retenu de cette manifestation passionnante. A bientôt!

Oui, Elfi, vous avez raison. C'est justement cette proximité avec "la vraie vie" qui rend cette oeuvre si attachante et si charmante.

Sapphire, Thank you very much for your personal indication about what is important for you about masks. It doesn't seem "odd" to me; on the contrary, I am very interested in everything that I don't know and the meaning it can represent for other people, especially when information comes from you, because I know your delicacy and I like to learn more about you. Is baseball very popular in Japan? What team do you support and why? Is it because the players are the best, the most original, because they live in your town, or for another reason? Is the tiger your favorite animal?
At home, I have masks : the traditional venetian white "domino" with the hat named "tricorne", the black venetian "bauta" with the botton, and another mask which is not venetian, which is called a "loup" (it covers only the upside of the head), made in feathers. I love these masks for what they represent and some years ago, I made a little video in my artschool. The subject was an "autoportrait" and, during a few seconds, I was wearing my two venetian masks.
I'd like to know more about masks in Japan and their meanings.

Hi

Baseball is one of the most popular sports in Japan. Soccer(football) is very popular too. There are 12 professional baseball teams and The Hanshin Tigers is my favourite team. I suppose you knew the team which frequently appear in Ogawa Yoko's "La Formule préférée du professeur". She is a Tigers' fan!! The Tigers' home is Koshien Stadium which is located in Hyogo Prefecture the captital of which is Kobe, my hometown. Tigers fans are known as perhaps the most fanatical and dedicated fans in all of Japanese professional baseball. One of the most famous players in Hanshin Tigers history is Enatsu(28), pitcher, who appears in the novel. There are a couple of reasons why I love the team; 1. I was born in Kobe where lots of Tigers' fans root for them. 2. It is really fun to root for the Tigers in stadiums(there are many women and children) where you can watch games while gentle breeze is blowing in evenings, you can sometimes see fireworks, many fans wear colorful funny costumes, you sing rooters' songs together, you can scream very loud if you like, and send up colorful baloons together(very beautiful!). I think many of the viewers can free their pent-up emotions hidden in their hearts by such childish behaviours(grin).
After games, I always feel very refreshed. I usually go to the Jingu Stadium in Tokyo to root for them(Koshien is very far). I hate dome stadiums. you can see some funny tigers' fans on the site below:

Oh You have traditional Venetian masks!! I envy you! They must be splendid!! As I didn't know about the masks and the names, I found your explanations very intriguing. Thank you!! I just saw many beautiful masks in Venice. I bought in Venice three brooches which have mask designs for a souvenir. Do you like to go to masquerades?

In Japan we have lots of Noh masks which are used in Noh plays. Compared with lovely Venetian masks, I suppose you may think Noh masks are scary and too simple. You can see some Noh masks on the site(written in French) below. You click on a picture you like to see, wait a minute or so, then you can see its larger image with a brief explanation on the right.

Thank you, Sapphire, for your very interesting explanations.
I don't have any experience supporting or being fan of a sport team and I realize, reading your comment, that it can be a very nice and exciting time, but I think in Japan the esthetic dimension and also courtesy are always present, while what we can see in France is rather bad, especially during football matches, so I am afraid of them. Surely, if I was in Japan and went to see a baseball play, I would appreciate it.
I shall look at the sites you have told me and I shall think, too, of sending a post about my venetian masks.
